Behind the rapeseed

The rapeseed plant thrives best in temperate climates and is mainly grown in Europe, North America and parts of Asia. The name rapeseed comes from the Latin "rapa," meaning turnip, and the plant is part of the cabbage family. It is an annual herbaceous plant with an upright growth habit and a strong taproot that helps it absorb nutrients and water from the soil.

The leaves of the rapeseed plant are green, smooth or slightly hairy and are scattered along the stem. The lower leaves are often larger and more lobed, while the upper leaves are smaller and more simple in shape. The plant flowers in spring, developing a tall, branched inflorescence filled with small, bright yellow flowers. These flowers attract bees and other pollinators and, after pollination, form the characteristic scapes in which the seeds mature.
