There are many thousands of different types of honey, which come from different nectars for example lavender, acacia, heather and orange blossom.

The consistency of honey is naturally fluid, but after a while it will start to crystallise and take on a solid consistency. The ratio of sugars in the honey determines how quickly the honey solidifies.

Frequently asked questions about honey

Is honey healthier than sugar?

Honey has a reputation for being healthier than sugar, as honey is a pure natural product. However, according to an article from the Danish Consumer Council Tænk, the difference between eating honey and sugar is so small that it would not be considered healthier than sugar. On the other hand, honey is sweeter than sugar, so you can make do with less honey than sugar.

What does honey consist of?

Honey is made from the nectar collected by bees, but what does it actually contain? Honey contains fructose, dextrose, minerals, proteins and flavors from the flowers the bees have collected nectar from. So what gives honey its flavor is the flowers that the bees have visited. Therefore, there will also be differences between honey produced at different times of the year. Source: The Danish Consumer Council Tænk

What is acacia honey?

Acacia honey is made from acacia, a very large plant genus whose flowers the bees collect nectar from and store it in their hives. Acacia honey is almost always liquid as it has a high fruit sugar content. It has a mild taste and is therefore one of the most popular types of honey.

What is real honey?

Real honey is a purely natural product. In fact, you can only call a product honey if it is genuine. Therefore, products with added water and sugar are not honey at all, although some people may try to deceive you with this. However, you can always be sure that honey from Jakobsens is 100% real honey.

What is the difference between solid and liquid honey?

Honey is naturally liquid, but after a while it will start to crystallize and become more solid. It is the ratio of the different sugars in the honey that determines how quickly the honey becomes solid. Therefore, solid honey is a product of time and stirring the liquid honey to dissolve lumps before pouring it into jars.

What is honey?

Honey is one of nature's many treasures. Honey is made by honeybees collecting nectar from selected flowers. This is stored in hives and then ripens into delicious honey for beekeepers to harvest. The color, taste and consistency of the honey can vary depending on which flowers the bees have collected nectar from.

What kind of honey is best?

It depends on taste and purpose which honey will be the best choice. If you're spreading it on a piece of bread, a solid honey would probably be preferable. There is a wide range of flavors to choose from that come from different types of nectar. For example, if you want to use it in cooking, both liquid and solid honey can be used, as both dissolve completely in liquid.

Can honey get too old?

In principle, honey never gets old due to its high sugar content, which has a preservative effect. However, it must be stored in a dry, dark and cool place. The lid must be kept tightly closed so that the honey does not get any air. According to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, there is generally a "Best before" shelf life of between 3 and 18 months. This is an indication that honey can be stored for longer.
