The 17 SDGs

How we work with the SDGs

At Jakobsens, we want to do something for people and the beautiful nature that surrounds us. That's why we actively pursue the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Below you can follow which SDGs we are actively working on.

UN Climate Goal #1

Abolish poverty

Jakobsens A/S buys Fairtrade certified honey, and we work closely with selected suppliers. We also support small, family-owned apiaries in developing countries.

UN Climate Goal #3

Health and well-being

Jakobsens A/S supports local and national health promotion initiatives through sponsorship. In addition, we work with suppliers who support the development of local health systems in their home countries.

UN Climate Goal #4

Quality training

We employ more students than the norm requires.
Our employees are continuously educated and trained through both internal and external courses.

UN Climate Goal #6

Clean water and sanitation

We continuously monitor and work to reduce water consumption in our production.

UN Climate Goal #7

Sustainable energy

We buy green energy and have switched to energy-saving light bulbs in both production and administrative premises.

UN Climate Goal #8

Decent jobs and economic growth

Jakobsens A/S supports the development of some of the world's small, local communities by buying honey from them.

UN Climate Goal #9

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

We keep our facilities up to date so we don't generate unnecessary pollution and waste.

We are constantly working to optimise our work processes so that we leave the least possible environmental impact.

UN Climate Goal #10

Less inequality

Through cooperation with suppliers in several developing countries, Jakobsens A/S supports the fight against inequality in these societies - for example between rich and poor and between the sexes.

UN Climate Goal #11

Sustainable cities and communities

Jakobsens A/S supports the local community through sponsorships. In addition, we work with suppliers who support the development of local communities in their own countries.

UN Climate Goal #12

Responsible consumption and production

In addition to sending our waste cardboard and paper from both production and administration for recycling, 100% of the cardboard and paper we use is FSC-certified. In addition, the majority of our squeeze bottles for liquid honey are made from recycled plastic.

UN Climate Goal #15

Life on land

Jakobsens A/S supports the organic way of thinking by buying organic honey both in Denmark and from our suppliers in developing countries.

UN Climate Goal #16

Peace, justice and strong institutions

Jakobsens A/S is a trustworthy company. We demand the same from our suppliers. A requirement for foreign suppliers is that they adhere to our Code of Conduct, which is a description of Jakobsens A/S ethical code.
Naturally, Jakobsens A/S does not accept any form of corruption.

UN Climate Goal #17

Partnerships for action

In the fight against honey adulteration, Jakobsens A/S has entered into close cooperation with the world's leading laboratories for honey analysis. We always make sure to use the latest and best methods to detect honey adulteration.

- We respect nature, each other, the product and differences.

Jakobsens A/S

CSR

A value-adding food supplier

Jakobsens A/S puts the emphasis on a healthy life in balance and the good taste in the meal. We do this by increasing the range of quality food products for conscious consumers who value the sustainable and natural.

That's why we also work hard to be a socially and environmentally responsible company. Against this background, Jakobsens A/S has prepared this CSR report in order to make the areas of work, goals and progress visible.

Jakobsens A/S is a value-driven company. We incorporate our values into everything we do.

That's why our CSR report is based on our five themes, each with its own values.

The 17 SDGs

Jakobsens A/S wants to do something for the people and nature that surrounds us, and we actively relate to the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The SDGs, adopted at the UN Summit in 2015, aim to fight extreme poverty and hunger, reduce inequality and combat climate change, as well as ensure a more sustainable future for all on Earth.

We are all responsible for the development of our planet and for taking part in the change needed to secure our children's future. That is why Jakobsens A/S is constantly working to optimise our efforts in the following four areas:

1) Environment, climate and ecology 2) Supplier management 3) Employees 4) Social commitment

"We are value creators - when we do something, it's to make it better than it was"

4 selected areas

Our CSR policy guides our efforts in the four chosen areas and addresses the following:

  • We provide sustainable solutions in plastics and cardboard
  • We have an environmental policy that includes targets for reducing water, electricity and gas consumption.
  • We are continuously working to recycle more of our waste.
  • All raw material suppliers sign our Code of Conduct.
  • We audit all suppliers in Risk countries in the area of social responsibility at least every 3 years.
  • We have 0 tolerance for corruption and adulteration of honey.
  • We have satisfied and loyal employees with low absenteeism.
  • Our employees are continuously trained through internal and external courses.
  • We take responsibility for the future workforce by always employing more students than the target set by the Danish government.

Use of resources

Jakobsens A/S works to reduce the consumption of electricity, water and gas in production. Consumption is therefore closely monitored. Investments in reducing consumption have resulted in large reductions in water, electricity and gas.

We buy green energy and have switched to energy-saving light bulbs in both production and administrative premises.

Jakobsens A/S also tries to reduce the consumption of resources by sending cardboard and paper for recycling. 100% of the cardboard and paper we use for packaging is FSC-certified as of 01/08-2019. This certification is a guarantee that animal and plant life is protected and that the people working in the forests are trained and work under proper conditions.

At the end of 2019, Jakobsens A/S also switched to using recycled plastic on the majority of our squeeze bottles. The aim is that the remaining plastic packaging will also switch to recycled plastic during 2020.

Ongoing optimizations

As part of our efforts to reduce our resource consumption, Jakobsens has made many changes, both large and small, to our daily work processes, which has significantly reduced the loss of raw materials in production during 2017-2018. Although we have achieved very satisfactory results, we will continue to combat food waste and keep this aspect in mind in our daily work.

Promoting ecology, sustainability and health

A large part of Jakobsen's products are labelled with the Danish organic label Ø or the Swedish KRAV label. This is the consumer's guarantee that the honey has been produced according to state-controlled organic production methods and that the environment, nature and animal welfare have been taken into account in production.

See Jakobsen's organic products here.

Good working environment

At Jakobsens A/S we are proud of our employees. It is our vision to be best in class in employee satisfaction, because we believe that satisfied and engaged employees make a difference. Therefore, an employee satisfaction and well-being survey was conducted in 2017. This showed that all employees' overall satisfaction levels were above average. In addition, the survey showed that our employees were loyal and responsible, which creates value for Jakobsens A/S on a daily basis.

In 2019, we chose to repeat the survey, with 76% of employees responding in the "very satisfied" or "satisfied" categories, indicating that satisfaction has evolved positively while remaining high overall. Further, employees respond that there is no bullying at work, that they are loyal to Jakobsens, and that they are satisfied with their jobs.

At Jakobsens A/S, we put sustainable employee management first, which means a constant focus - not only on the physical but also the psychological working environment. Our managers and middle managers are trained to take care of the human resource that the employees represent. This is done by constantly preventing the imbalances that can arise in the psychological working environment. This may be during periods of increased work pressure or personal challenges for the individual.

Quality education, decent jobs and economic growth

Surveys conducted in 2018 show that one in ten companies lose orders due to a lack of skilled workers. A large part of the explanation is that in Denmark we train too few skilled workers in industry. At Jakobsens A/S, we take our responsibility seriously and have therefore set a goal that we will always have at least 2 apprentices employed, even if the set norm is less than 1. The apprenticeships can vary from production to quality and administration depending on our needs.

In a specialised industry like the honey industry, it is important to pass on the expertise that is built up over the years. That is why employees are regularly trained in their fields of work and in the various production processes.

Code of Conduct

In addition to buying honey locally, Jakobsens A/S imports honey from all over the world. In the summer of 2017, we implemented our first official Code of Conduct, which is based on the UN Global Compact. This Code of Conduct describes the minimum ethical requirements for how Jakobsens A/S wants to conduct business. We see it as our duty to influence our suppliers to also comply with these standards. In 2018, we achieved that all our existing raw material suppliers joined and signed our Code of Conduct. In the future, all new suppliers will also be required to adhere to Jakobsen A/S's requirements for ethical business conduct.

Fighting corruption and counterfeiting

The biggest threats to the honey industry are corruption and adulteration of honey, which Jakobsens is experiencing to a great extent. We have a zero tolerance policy on this and we expect our suppliers to comply with this policy. This is communicated both in our daily cooperation with our suppliers and during our numerous supplier visits. In addition, our suppliers commit to working with the code of ethics formulated in our Code of Conduct.

Jakobsens A/S has a close cooperation with the world's leading laboratories in Germany, where the raw honey is thoroughly analysed before it is bottled in Denmark. Jakobsens A/S ensures, through our comprehensive analysis plan, that the honey is always analysed according to the latest and best methods. This is done to ensure consumers a clean and safe product every time.

Life on land

In 2020, Jakobsens A/S will begin work to convert a former piece of farmland into a natural bee and insect-friendly area. We are doing this because we want to help biodiversity and make room for animals and insects by creating a place where natural processes are allowed to take place.

Follow the progress of the project on our Facebook page from spring 2020.

Sustainable cities and communities

Jakobsens A/S also wants to support the local and national business community through, for example, cooperation with the Business Council - Herning and Ikast-Brande and Dansk Industris general employers' association.

Locally, Jakobsens A/S has cooperated with a Danish beekeeper, so the launch of an unheated, organic, Danish honey became possible in selected retail stores in autumn 2019.

Global engagement - responsible consumption and production

It is not only in Denmark that Jakobsens A/S wants to support beekeepers. In 2017, Jakobsens A/S entered into a partnership with a Danish honey producer in Nicaragua. There is a strong focus on people, the environment and community development. In addition, beekeepers from all over Central America are trained to ensure continued development and production.

Health and well-being

Jakobsens A/S supports the local handball club, Herning-Ikast Håndbold, the annual Stafet for Life and Team Rynkeby's road to Paris through sponsorships. In January 2018, Jakobsens, in cooperation with Rema 1000 Denmark, focused on brain damage, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis through the campaign Support a Sweet Cause. Here, customers could design their own honey, and the winner, Glem Ej Honning, could subsequently be purchased in Rema 1000. For every bottle sold, Jakobsens and Rema 1000 supported the Alzheimer's Association with DKK 2.

In 2019, Jakobsens and REMA 1000 joined forces to improve the quality of life for children with lung disease and their families. The Children's Lung Foundation was supported with DKK 2 per cup of Everyday Honey sold.

an optimal production

Minimal waste

At Jakobsens A/S we focus on minimising food waste. We have therefore developed and implemented machines that ensure the least possible waste.

This has resulted in a 22% reduction over the past three years and we are still working to optimise the process so we can continue to improve.

When nature cooperates

When beekeeping bears fruit

Honey from the Danish orchards is fruitful in several ways. Bees make honey, but they also play an important role in pollinating fruit trees.

Honey bees are indispensable in an orchard. For a plant to set seed, it must be pollinated. This means that pollen from the male flowers must be transferred to the female flowers of another plant. Since flowers cannot move, they need help to be pollinated. And this is where bees come in handy.

To ensure good fruiting, all fruit trees should be pollinated. Pollination takes place, among other things, via the migration of honeybees from flower to flower.

Danish honeybees contribute to high pollination in Danish orchards, so we can have more fruit and high quality honey at the same time. This has resulted in this idyllic honey collected from Danish orchards.
