Today Ekstra Bladet carries an article about an organic honey from Aldi, which is checked, processed and bottled here at our company. The criticism is that the honey, which is originally from Brazil, is labelled with the words "Danish produced" and a Danish flag - and that one can therefore believe that the honey is Danish.
We have never labelled Jakobsen's own products with the Danish flag or the term "Danish produced" if they were not of Danish origin.
The honey in question is, as I said, made for Aldi in what is called "Private Label", and therefore it is also Aldi that decides what is on the label.
In retrospect, however, we should have said no to Aldi, as they wanted the Danish flag on the product. We can now see that consumers have felt misled and beekeepers have felt squeezed for competitiveness. We very much regret this. Especially because it is very important to Jakobsens to protect consumers and ensure the continuation of Danish beekeeping. We can mention the following important initiatives:
- As one of the only producers in Europe, Jakobsens has decided not to supply Chinese honey in order to protect consumers and Danish beekeepers from cheating and unfair competition.
- In 2018, Jakobsens bought a large amount of Danish honey for storage to provide an income for beekeepers who could not otherwise dispose of their honey.
- Jakobsens has supported the development of Danish organic honey in several areas.
Once again, we regret that customers and suppliers have felt let down.
