Jakobsens celebrates Bees Day

On the occasion of Bees' Day, Jakobsens is focusing on nature's little heroes. In collaboration with BILKA, Jakobsens is handing out free flower seeds and samples of Jakobsens honey on Saturday, May 17 in all BILKA stores in Denmark. The seeds can be sown in the garden, window boxes or in flower pots - creating more habitats for bees and other pollinators.

Come and join us - together we can make a difference for bees!

Build an insect hotel

There are many guides online on how to make your own insect hotel, so you can easily and simply help the bees with a place in the garden where they can live and overwinter. Alternatively, if you don't have the courage to embark on Project Insect Hotel, you can make a pile of stones and branches in the corner of the garden, out of direct sunlight and protected from the wind and weather - the bees will thank you for that too.

Plant insect-friendly flowers in your garden

Maybe you have a small bare patch in your garden that you don't know what to do with, and you want to help the hard-working bees - then you can make them happy by planting lots of different flowers in your garden.

Bees love variety and especially flowers that are full of pollen and nectar are their favorites. For example, crocus, honeywort and erantissum are some of the flowers that bees love to pollinate and collect nectar from.

Let the garden grow

You've probably heard of the phenomenon of 'wild-will gardens'. These are gardens that you let grow and are designed to mimic and support natural ecosystems. By letting your garden grow, you can create a wonderful little oasis for bees - and remember, bees don't just like to buzz around in the grass. They love to collect their nectar and pollen from everything from fruit trees to hedges and, of course, flower beds - so it's a good idea to hold off on mowing the lawn, trimming the hedge and trimming the tree.

Stop using pesticides

There are many pesticides that are harmful to bees, not only the common insecticides, but also those used to control fungi and weeds. The thing is, pesticides can stop bees from reproducing, and if bee larvae are fed food containing pesticide residues, they won't develop properly. Therefore, you should think twice about the pesticides you use in your garden if you want to protect bees and our beautiful nature.

Provide water for the bees

As the weather warms up and things get drier in the garden, bees will appreciate having access to water. Bees use water both to cool their bodies and to cool their nests in the summer.

You can make it easy for bees to access water by setting up a water source - a simple method is to place a flat bowl or dish of water in your garden. Make sure to place the bowl in a sunny spot and fill it with water regularly. You can also add some floating plants or stones to the bowl to give bees a place to sit and drink.
